Jacob Is 7 Months Old!

I ordered raw amber teething necklace for Jacob from Inspired by Finn online store as his 7th month present. Sophia has been wearing hers since she was an infant. I hope the necklace will calm Jacob's irritability & give him more peaceful sleep. So far I got rid of my favorite daily cup of Two Leaves and a Bud darjeeling tea to decrease Jacob's caffeine intake (whatever small amount passes into my breast milk). It's harder to get through the day without some caffeine & I even occasionally catch myself falling asleep when writing in patients' electronic charts at work (thankfully, no one seems to notice).

Jacob's 2nd set of teeth (top front) is coming in so our biggest hurdle is still lack of consistent sleep. The longest Jacob sleeps is one 4-5-hour stretch at night & then he is up every 30"-2 hours on most nights. My Mom decided to take a day off & spent one night at her friend's house recently. I was so tired from watching Jacob, I took a 3-hour nap upon her return the following day. I don't know how she does it night after night.

Jacob continues to love food. He is so eager to try all sorts of flavors & textures. He is curious & looks forward to trying something new every day. I simply can't eat in front of him anymore. Just as I put a bite of something into my mouth, he opens his mouth as well & looks so disappointed if I don't put something into it. He really reminds me of a baby bird. He doesn't just ask for food; he demands it by yelling, squinting & jumping up & down in my arms. We keep laughing about him not ever going hungry.

Jacob's breast milk intake decreased somewhat. I now have 8-10 oz of milk sitting in the fridge on most days where as before he drank almost everything I pumped & I often worried whether I could keep up with his eating demands. I still pump about 5-6 times a day (25-30 oz total), & it has been a relief to go longer between pumping sessions. I even can get away with taking only 2 pumping breaks at work instead of having to pump every 3 hours when Jacob was younger.

My Mom & my husband keep telling me to quit pumping soon, but I just don't feel ready. Every time I read the formula ingredients (corn syrup solids, anyone?), I can't imagine putting it into his little body. I feel as long as Jacob has my milk he is protected. I don't mind the inconvenience & the lack of sleep due to the round-the-clock pumping since my breastmilk keeps him relatively healthy. I tell my husband that we are going to be up at night anyways, & I'd rather it be for pumping than to care for a sick baby. Also, I feel uneasy about quitting "breastfeeding" & not vaccinating (at least partially). With the immune support provided by my breastmilk gone, what's going to keep Jacob from catching multiple viruses & bacteria out there?

Jacob is really fascinated with dog food & likes to empty the dog food bowl again...

and again...

On July 6th (at 7 months & 8 days old) Jacob began crawling. I especially memorized this date since his crawling began so much earlier than I expected. Most surprising of all, it preceeded him learning how to sit independently! I often wonder why Jacob is developing so differently from Gerritt & Sophia. Genetics? The fact that he's been almost exclusively "breastfed" since birth? Maybe it's because he had a chance to fully "bake" staying inside me for exactly 41 weeks? Or maybe because he hasn't received any vaccinations? Even though Jacob doesn't crawl on all fours & does it while laying on his abdomen, he is surprisingly fast. On his 2nd day of crawling he got into the dog food bowl & spilled the dog food all over the kitchen. And so it begins...

Semi-reclined position in a stroller was the only way Jacob could sleep for a few days

After a cold & cloudy June, we finally got some sun & warmth in July. Poor Jacob got his first cold. We've been blessed he hasn't gotten ill until now. He was feverish & had a hard time breathing through his stuffy nose. He lost his appetite & started to eat less often. My Mom & I probably haven't slept for at least 4 nights (Jacob was up crying every 1-2 hours). I even had to resort to putting him to sleep in his stroller while sitting upright. We put a few drops of my breastmilk into Jacob's nose & suctioned it with a bulb syringe every few hours (with him screaming & struggling to turn his head away), but other than that there was not much else we could do. Gerritt, Sophia, my husband & I all went through the same cold just a few days prior so I was hoping my breastmilk would already contain the antibodies to help Jacob fight this virus. I was happy once more for not quitting exclusive pumping too early.

Jacob's Favorite Toys

Jacob is 6.5 months old & is almost crawling. I put a blanket on the carpet in the living room for him & try to keep him entertained by putting various objects on the blanket's periphery. It's always interesting to see Jacob's choice of toys. He prefers a box of baby wipes to playing with supposedly more "developmental" & "stimulating" baby toys. Of course he checks the toys out for a few minutes, but nothing holds his attention for as long as the box of wipes. He also loves small plastic balls & paper bags he can rip. Go figure...

A Birthday Party

Gerritt, Sophia & I went to friend's birthday party today (to avoid unnecessary stress, Jacob stayed at home with babushka). The differences between my two older children's personalities became immediately apparent.
Soon after arrival to an unfamiliar to both of them place, Sophia left us to explore the apartment all on her own while Gerritt stayed close to me. I could hear Sophia playing with the new toys she found & talking to new people she met. Gerritt sat behind me on a chair for quite some time & then moved onto my lap while trying to convince me to take him to the playroom ("I want you to come with me, Mommy") as he didn't feel comfortable going there by himself.

When the time came to serve the cake, Sophia quickly climbed onto the chair next to the birthday boy Jude & even attempted to take the first slice of cake being served. In contrast, Gerritt stood next to the table longingly looking at the cake & patiently awaiting his turn.

After the cake Jude opened a few presents & then invited everyone to jump on the trampoline. Only one child was allowed to jump on it at one time, so kids had to take turns. When another child bypassed Sophia even though it was her turn, she jumped up right next to the intruder, "My turn!" When the same thing happened to Gerritt, he ran straight into my arms while trying hard not to cry. I gently explained to him that crying was not going to fix anything & he needed to go back to the trampoline & insist on his turn. Thankfully, it worked, & a few minutes later Gerritt was jumping & smiling happily.

I saw Sophia enjoying herself while jumping on the couch (until I told her to get off) & even sitting on someone's lap. Gerritt eventually left my side to play by himself, but he made frequent contact with me.
As much as I would like to believe we raised Gerritt & Sophia the same way, there are definitely a few differences. Gerritt reminds me so much of myself in childhood - sensitive & cautious. It probably didn't help that he was the firstborn of an overly protective mother like me. Sophia's personality is similar to my husband's - happy-go-lucky, rambunctious & easygoing. Gerritt was 19 months old when she was born & he was still very attached to me. As a result, Sophia learned to be independent quickly. There is always a debate going on about nature vs. nurture. The beauty of being a parent is that I have a privilege to observe just how they will both play out as time goes by. :-)

The Return Of The Dalmatian

About 2.5 years ago, Gerritt received a stuffed dalmatian puppy as a goodbye present from Ms. Tamara, his beloved Russian daycare teacher. He fell in love with it instantly &, along with his stuffed brown dog from Ikea, carried it with him everywhere including bed, car, park, dentist, etc. After a while, as Gerritt's collection of stuffed animals grew, the dalmatian occasionally got left behind. When Gerritt turned 4 years old, in my haste to get rid of all malfunctioning & less popular toys, I donated the dalmatian to Goodwill. Gerritt seemed to prefer his brown dog, &, in my mind, wasn't going to miss the worn out, floppy dalmatian.
Unfortunately, I was wrong. Gerritt not only noticed its absence, but he wanted it back. After being told that the dalmatian got donated so other children who didn't have any toys could play with it, Gerritt insisted on looking for his dalmatian on every shopping trip to Goodwill. We also looked for a replacement dalmatian at Target, Fred Meyer, Costco & Walmart without much luck. The rare dalmatians we found either were not the right size, were not soft or cute enough.
Yesterday I took Gerritt & Sophia with me on a shopping trip to Ikea. Of course, we had to stop by the kids' section to play & look around &, what joy!, discovered a large box full of soft dalmatians for sale. Sophia got a soft bunny & Gerritt got a new dalmatian puppy. It was worth a long trip to Ikea to see Gerritt's lit up face. Peace & happiness restored...for now.

Dora

My 3-year-old daughter Sophia has always loved Dora the Explorer child cartoon character. She watches the series almost daily via Netflix & knows numerous songs & character lines by heart. Dora was instrumental in Sophia learning how to count to 15 in Spanish as well as introducing her to many Spanish words. Sophia has Dora the Explorer stuffed & plastic dolls, Dora toothbrush & Dora backpack.

It should be no surprise that Sophia also wears Dora pajamas. Only our little girl has not one or two, but 3 sets! My husband who otherwise never shops for kids' clothes decided his little princess needed one light set for summer & another warmer one to wear during winter. Thanks to a recent birthday present from Korean grandma (if you guessed, another Dora pajamas!), there is now no shortage of Dora-inspired clothes at our house!

Daddy's girl!
