Merry Christmas!

Gerritt, Sophia & I at the Teddy Bear Suite

After having filet mignon & prawn breakfast (!) & opening a few more presents left by Santa in the Christmas stockings on Christmas morning, we visited the Teddy Bear Suite at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel. Originally, we were planning to spend the day with Gerry & Chris, but had to make different plans after they unexpectedly left for home early due to Gerry's cold. It's always a struggle to find something to do on a major holiday since almost everything is closed. I suddenly remembered the Teddy Bear Suite highly recommended by my Facebook friend Carrie. I called, hoping, by a slim chance, that they were opened on Christmas Day. Sure enough, they were! We quickly dressed up & loaded everyone into the car excited to get out of the house, experience something new & to have an opportunity to take some amazing holiday photos.
The Teddy Bear Suite is opened for a little over a month every Christmas holiday season. It is designed by a Seattle-based interior & event designer, Kevin Bradford, & brims with dozens of fluffy teddy bears. The Suite did not disappoint. The combination of lights, decorations, colors & textures as well as teddy bears of all shapes & sizes was simply amazing! Gerritt & Sophia could not believe their luck & ran around in excitement. The only missing element was Christmas music, but even without the music, the trip was worth it. The admission was free, but we made a donation to the Children's Hospital. Perhaps another Christmas holiday tradition in the making for us!

Beautiful Sophia - she could almost be mistaken for a doll

This year we've decided to open our presents on Christmas Eve. As usual we went a little overboard with presents for the kids, but it was worth it to see their excited faces. Sophia was a lot more aware of the gift opening process compared to last Christmas & Gerritt was very gracious to help Sophia open her presents. Although we could definitely cut back on the number of presents next year, we were good about buying toys that would be educational, stimulating & encourage creativity. Here are Gerritt & Sophia's favorite ones:

1) Educo by Hape International Park n' Go Garage (it is often Gerritt's favorite toy to play with at the Crossroads toy store)
2) Reversible Superman Batman superhero cape costume with mask (Gerritt has been playing with Spike's dog blanket for months now, so he could really use a real cape)
3) Dora the Explorer playdough set & the Lego construction set (thanks Taj & Gabe!)
4) Melissa & Doug magnetic wooden alphabet (Sophia loves to play with magnets on the refrigerator door)
5) Melissa & Doug wooden shape sorting clock (I started to teach Gerritt about time recently)
6) Melissa & Doug deluxe magnetic responsibility chart (to help Gerritt learn about responsibility & give him points for things done right)
7) Melissa & Doug deluxe latches board (this one can keep Sophia busy for a while!)
8) Several sets of the Brain Quest preschool & kindergarten flash cards (Gerritt loves to study them at bedtime)
9) Rolling Coaster Children's Ride-on Car (both Gerritt & Sophia love to ride it at the Crossroads toy store)
10) Smart Snacks Rainbow Color Cones - a set of 8 multicolored ice cream scoops & 2 cones (thanks Chris & Gerry!)
11) Corolle baby doll Bebe Tresor (An amazing soft-bodied BPA-free doll that cries or coos, depending on her body position. Both Gerritt & Sophia love giving her the bottle, & I highly support gender neutral play!) (thanks again Chris & Gerry!)
12) Kid Galaxy My 1st RC GoGo police car (Gerritt has been dying to get his 1st remote controlled car!)
13) Thomas & Friends engine shed (Gerritt loves anything to do with trains) (thank you Chris & Gerry!)

And, to top it all off, Gerritt got his first real bike with training wheels! We have enough toys now to officially open our own home daycare business, or have a few more kids. :-)
My husband & I bought our own Christmas presents - just like we've done for as long as we've been married. We believe that the best presents are the ones you buy yourself (only you would know what exactly makes you happy). Plus, ever since having kids our idea of romance consists of letting each other sleep in or for one of us to take the kids out of the house for a few hours so another one can have some down time. I personally consider my husband's dedication in watching Sophia at night for weeks at a time (as I've complained several times before - she's still not sleeping through the night) a lot more romantic than getting a surprise gift. Santa brought me a pink pearl necklace, snow boots, & a complete set of the Vampire Academy books. My husband received a new shaver & a GPS for his car. The evening was finished with leaving milk & cookies for Santa & carrots for the reindeer. All ready for Christmas tomorrow!

Santa photos

Yesterday I took the kids to the Crossroads Mall for their annual Santa photo. It has become an essential part of our Christmas season. I really enjoy dressing them up in cheerful holiday outfits even though it takes a lot of work. Last year we drove to the Alderwood Mall in Lynnwood since the Santa photoshop there was one of a few offering electronic images saved on a CD (paper images fade, you know). Thankfully, this year the Crossroads Mall near our house started to offer electronic imaging as well. We took the photo yesterday & I received the image in my email today. Easy!
You may remember Gerritt's 2008 Santa photo below. The Santa picture taking was so traumatic for him, we skipped that activity for him completely last Christmas.

Gerritt & Santa in 2008

It was Sophia's turn to cry this year. Gerritt was so happy to sit in Santa's lap & even smiled upon request. Sophia, on the other hand, started to holler the second I placed her in Santa's arms. She was literally trying to jump out of his embrace. As much as I sympathized with Sophia's distress, it was also comical, so I HAD to buy the photo. :-)

Mind you, she turned off her crying just like that the minute I picked her up. So no long-lasting psychological damage there. I plan on framing the kids' Christmas photos & displaying them around the house every Christmas season. We'll have quite a collection by the time they reach high school!

This is a photo of me as a little girl celebrating New Year's (it's celebrated much more than Christmas in Russia)

While at the Mall, we visited the Starbucks coffee shop for chocolate milk/hot egg & sausage sandwich for the kids & chai tea for me. Then we attended a Christmas concert by a group of middle school kids. Of course, we had to make a stop at our favorite toy store, ride the cars & play educational computer games at the library.

We also returned due books & then selected new ones to enjoy for the next month. Gerritt is into the superheroes now, so after renewing his top two favorite books twice, I eventually had to return them. :-)

DC Super Friends: Brain Freeze! by J. E. Bright (Gerritt's favorite)
Batman: The Story of The Dark Knight by R. Cosentino (Gerritt's favorite)
Bounce by Doreen Cronin & Scott Menchin
My Dog Lyle by J. Goldfinger
Goldilocks & the Three Bears by James Marshall
One Brown Bunny by Marion Bauer
Tales From Radiator Springs: Step 1 & Step 2 Books - A Collection of Six Early Readers by various authors (Gerritt's favorite)
ABC: Letters in the Library by Bonnie Farmer
No Place for a Pig by Suzanne Bloom
The Green Frogs (a Korean folktale) by Yumi Heo
Someone Bigger by J. Emmett
Where Do I Sleep? A Pacific Northwest Lullaby by J. Blomgren
Red Riding Hood by J. Marshall
A Very Brave Witch by A. McGhee & H. Bliss
A Pig is Big by D. Florian
Bear in Sunshine by S. Blackstone
The Mitten by J. Brett (a Ukranian folktale)

Another productive day & just 10 days left until Christmas!

Our Christmas Tree

Ready, set, go!

Sophia & Mommy

Daddy & Sophia

Yesterday we all went to the Home Depot to get our Christmas tree. After debating for a few weeks, whether to get a fresh or artificial one, we've settled on a fresh tree (the time was mostly spent convincing my fiscally responsible husband that getting a fresh tree made more sense). Fresh Christmas trees are environmentally friendly, support our local Christmas tree farmers, & are healthier (no lead dust exposure & resulting reduced IQ in kids).
It was raining heavily & we were all recovering from a bad cold. By the end of the trip we were soaken wet, tired & slightly irritated, but the tree was worth it. It was fresh, bright green & taller than our usual pick (at least 6 feet). It was pretty heavy so it took some maneuvering to get it into the house. The carpet & floor were covered with Christmas tree needles, so Gerritt & I spent some time vacuuming & cleaning (Did I mention Gerritt now loves to vacuum?). While my husband & Sophia went to bed early, Gerritt & I stayed up until 11 pm putting the ornaments on the tree & wrapping a few more presents. Gerritt's job was to put scotch tape on the boxes & to decorate the presents with Christmas-themed stickers.

My favorite sight - sparkling of the Christmas tree lights in the dark

I've instructed Gerritt to watch Sophia carefully & keep her away from the tree. Surprisingly, she didn't touch the tree even once since waking up today. Gerritt was the one who kept rearranging the ornaments to find the "perfect fit."
There is certainly nothing like the scent & sight of a beautiful Christmas tree to get you into the Christmas spirit! That, along with a snow globe, a hand-decorated wooden egg from Russia featuring St. Nicholas, a Christmas cross-stitched pillow & a Santa figurine create a perfect holiday house ready for entertaining!

Also, I love watching special movies around Christmas time. A few days ago Gerritt & I watched a true American classic The Wizard of Oz from 1939. He was thoroughly impressed & proceeded to pretend that Spike was Toto & he was the Wicked Witch of the West for the rest of the night. The Scarecrow, the Tin Man & the Cowardly Lion were well liked too.

It's not hard to imagine how this movie became the most-watched film in history (according to the Library of Congress) & is often ranked among the top 10 best fantasy movies of all-time. We'll have to watch it again once Sophia is a bit older. She may enjoy dressing up as Dorothy for Halloween. In fact, I already have a Dorothy dress that I bought on sale this fall! :-)

Elvis, Goodbye Spectrum Academy & Hello 3-day Weekends!

Today Sophia & I watched the re-runs of the Ed Sullivan show while Gerritt took a nap. This American classic is not something I would watch willingly on my day off, however, the reason we did was to see some of the first performances of Elvis Presley (September 9th & October 28th in 1956, to be exact). I didn't expect myself to get goose bumps watching a show from 1956, but I did. It's like I was one of the screaming adoring girls in the crowd. :-) Elvis has been dead for many years, but his star power continues to shine brightly & his performances are as captivating as ever. I happen to be an Elvis fan & need my Elvis fill about twice a year. Sometimes I listen to his music; sometimes I watch movies about Elvis ("Elvis & Me" (1988) or "Elvis: The Miniseries" (2005, with one of my favorite actors Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Elvis)); & sometimes I read the Elvis & Me book by Priscilla Presley. I really enjoyed watching Elvis on the Ed Sullivan show today. He was a bit coy on his 1st show, famously moved his hips on the 2nd, & was shot only from the waist up by his 3rd performance (January 6th, 1957). :-) The beginnings of the Rock'n'Roll... Perhaps some day I will visit the Graceland.

"I am going to freeze you, Mommy!" (Gerritt wearing his Mr. Freeze outfit - purple hat & a bulb syringe which serves as a gun)

The kids at lunch today :-)

Earlier in the day Gerritt & I wrapped a few Christmas presents. I've done most of my shopping on line on December 2nd when my husband & the kids were away at grandma's house (overstock.com & walmart.com), & some of the presents have already arrived.
Sophia had her 1st dental visit today with Dr. Thomas. Her teeth looked great, but the dentist told me no more formula drinking at night. He suggested we do "cry it out" to train her not to wake up at night & if she wakes up, give her only water. Easier said than done. Dr. Thomas suggested to do it over the Christmas break. Hmmm... Gerritt was a good support person for Sophia. She cried during the exam, but stopped as soon as it was over. Gerritt missed the attention from Dr. Thomas & announced he was "sick" & needed a doctor too in the car on our way back. Of course, only Dr. Thomas could make him feel better. :-)
On November 30th we gave our 1-month notice at the Spectrum Academy. I've decided to pull Gerritt out after all. I have many reasons. First, most of the time he doesn't want to separate from me & if he knows I am going to be home for the day, he'd rather stay home. I just hate those mornings where I have to deal with his crying & drag him to school when he doesn't want to go. Second, there is too much pressure on the kids in America to excel academically & the earlier, the better. The Academy's director even told me that her kids started reading at age 3 (!). Really? As far as I am concerned it doesn't prove anything. Reading & writing at an early age is not a predictor of child's future academic success. In fact, the research is clear that teaching reading before age 6 greatly increases the possibility of later learning problems & underachievement (thanks to the Earlier Isn't Better When It Comes To Reading article Chris sent to me recently). I didn't know how to read prior to my enrollment in an elementary school & learned to read at age 7 & still managed to graduate high school in 1995 with a gold medal (the highest academic honor in Russian schools). Generations of preschool kids were kept at home & thrived on nothing, but unstructured play. In fact, there is an unschooling movement among some American parents. Gerritt brings home various school projects (mostly letters & numbers) regularly, but I know he didn't do them by himself. All of the handouts are a show for parents to justify an expensive school. :-) Third, I am so tired of driving to pick Gerritt up from school at noon at my lunch hour. Instead of sitting down & surfing the net or reading an interesting book for 1 hour, I rush to pick him up at noon & not a minute later (there is a late fee of $1/minute after 12 pm), drop him off at home, deal with him crying or whining ("Mommy don't go!") again. Fourth, we are pretty involved parents. We take Gerritt places (zoo, museums, parks, library), read, do crafts, study flash cards (our favorite are the Brain Quest ones), just to name a few. Going to the Academy is not the only education he gets. Fifth, spending $450/month (3 half-days/week) all before age 5 is not the money I consider well spent with college expenses down the road. We will probably have 3 kids & hope for all of them to go to college, so you do the math.

Gerritt's tricycle outing (Santa will be bringing a bigger bike with training wheels this Christmas :-))

I have only 2 more Saturdays to work as a Nurse Practitioner at the clinic, so starting in January I will have every Saturday off. The upper management decided to eliminate Saturdays for budgetary reasons (there wasn't enough revenue to make them worthwhile). In addition, I have decided not to work at the hospital on Sundays anymore. My schedule starting in January will consist of working Tuesday through Friday with 3 (!) days off in a row (Saturday - Monday). Ever since my husband & I got married I have always worked on weekends, so I am really excited about this chance to spend more family time together.
We got married in June of 2005 & I've started graduate school in August. I had to work many weekends since my classes were usually scheduled during the week. Once Gerritt was born in 2007, it was also convenient to work weekends in order to save on daycare costs. Then Sophia came along in 2009 & again, it made sense to work on the weekends. I was just thinking recently how annoying it was to go somewhere every Saturday & Sunday. My husband & kids both want me home. Also many interesting things are happening on Saturdays (birthday parties, festivals, the Lakeshore Learning Store free craft hour, theater performances, etc.). It just didn't make sense to work weekends anymore. I am going to be "normal" again & spend time with my family just like everyone else does!

Gerritt's First Gingerbread House

This evening Gerritt & I made a gingerbread house. It was the first gingerbread house for both of us & this activity was totally spontaneous. As you may have heard, our nanny is out of the country (she is returning tomorrow evening). After taking one week off work over the Thanksgiving break & having my husband take another 2 weeks off to care for our kids, I was in desperate need to find a babysitter for one more day - tomorrow. I thought about staying home myself (how important is this meeting anyways?), I tried to convince my hubby to take another day off work, & I've also tried to solicit help from his Mom - all unsuccesfully. Too bad they had a fight a couple of days ago, & he was so irritated with her, he prohibited me from calling & inviting her over (me saying, "I didn't have a fight with her, so I am calling & inviting her over!" didn't go over so well).
The meeting I was in such a desperate need to attend was my clinic's semiannual All Clinician Meeting. Let me see... A chance to see & network with old friends & colleagues, interesting continuing education presentations (a set number of continuing ed hours is required for my ARNP license), Christmas dessert potluck, free lunch (probably courtesy of a drug rep), & relaxing & intellectually stimulating day that I would get paid for vs. being on Mom duty for the whole day instead. The choice was easy, so an intense search for childcare began. It's not that I don't enjoy spending time with my children (I really do!), but after more than a week of togetherness, I need to venture out.
Thankfully, my husband remembered about the emergency childcare available through Microsoft (I am so grateful for this company's wonderful benefits yet again). For only $4/hour we arranged for a nanny from the Nannies For Hire agency to come to our house for the duration of my meeting. Of course, no one will work for $4/hour, so the way it works is that Microsoft subsidizes the hourly cost for up to 100 hours/year (the agency really charges $20 or more/hour). The emergency childcare may be used in order to prevent missing work in cases when one's other childcare arrangements fall through or the child is mildly ill. We had the option of dropping Gerritt & Sophia off at the Bright Horizons (the best childcare there is around here) or have a nanny come to our house. I've decided to have someone come to our home to minimize the kids' stress (especially Sophia's).
Unfortunately, I happen to be one of those people who has to clean before the housekeeper comes (you know what I mean). So several hours later, the carpets were vacuumed, the floors were washed, the dishes washed & put away, the kitchen countertops polished, the kitchen table decluttered, the kids' toys organized, grocery shopping done, & dinner made (heaven forbid, the nanny would not have enough to feed the kids!). I also typed up a list of must-have information (kids' likes/dislikes, phone numbers, daily routine schedule, etc.) for the nanny.
As usual, my little "tail," Gerritt, went to the grocery store with me where we saw the gingerbread house kit. I bought it with the intent to work on it on my next day off, however, Gerritt had other plans. The gingerbread house had to be made immediately. After trying to talk him out of it, I gave up, thinking, "Why not?" There is no time like the present. One thing the children are really good at is enjoying the moment.

So only an hour later (which involved mixing & pasting the sticky mixture of egg white, powdered sugar & lemon juice), the gingerbread house was erected! Gerritt's happy face was so worth the mess, & perhaps we have another Christmas tradition in the making? I am still looking forward to my work meeting tomorrow, but I will feel just a little less guilty being away from home having spent some quality time with Gerritt tonight.
